The 1975-6 season was a very decent one for the addicks; they finished the season off in ninth position, in their first season back in the second tier of English football. The addicks enjoyed a good run in the FA cup that saw the side progress to the fifth round of the competition, eventually losing against Wolves 3-0.
The 1976-77 campaign was the year of Mike Flanagan, who was prolific in front for Charlton, scoring a staggering 23 league goals, making him the divisions top goal scorer. Charlton looked dangerous through out the campaign and finished off the season in a strong seventh position. The 1977-78 term witnessed a gradual decline in the clubs fortunes and they stumbled down the division, only managing a 17th position finish. Keith Peacock was inspirational for the club during the entire campaign. Everything became worse for Nelson and the Valliant’s during the 78-79 season, they suffered a humiliating finish to the season, finishing it off in 19th place, however the following year they were relegated back to the third tier of English football, finishing it off in 22nd position. Mike Bailey managed the club during that season and he was in charge while the club were demoted.
