The 1960-61 season proved to be Jimmy Trotters final year in charge at the club and the Addicks could only manage a mid table finish, finishing off in tenth place. They were poor during their first ever league cup, suffering elimination in the first round as they lost 3-1 against West Ham United. They suffered heartbreak in the FA Cup, stumbling out in the third round, narrowly losing a thrilling contest with Spurs 3-2.
Frank Hill was appointed as the Addicks new manager at the start of the 61-62 campaign and his adventure was far from spectacular. They were poor in the second division, finishing the season off in 15th place. They reached the fifth round of the FA cup; however they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa. They were humbled out of the league cup in the third round, losing against Rochdale.
The 1962-63 season proved to be a debacle for Hill’s men, they were fortunate to avoid relegation to the third division as they finished the season off in a dismal 20th position. They reached the last sixteen of the league cup and lost a thrilling contest against Leyton Orient 3-2. Their season took a further downturn in the league cup as they suffered a heavy 3-0 thrashing against Chelsea.
Frank Hill’s finest season in charge at the club would have to be regarded as the 1963-64 campaign. The Addicks were emphatic in the second division and really made a sound improvement in their play, finishing the season off in a strong forth position. They endured a miserable year in the domestic cup competitions. They suffered a humiliating 7-1 thumping against Blackpool in the second round of the league cup. Worse was to follow in the FA cup as they crashed out, losing 3-0 to West Ham United.
The 1964-65 season saw an improvement in cup form, reaching the last sixteen of the league cup, losing against Bradford City 1-0. Their league fortunes took a turn for the worse, finishing the season off in 18th place.
