1900-1950 Charlton Athletic were formed in the year 1905 and turned professional in 1920, joining the third division south in 1921. Their early years in football were marked by low attendances and financial troubles. However, when Jimmy Seed took charge at the club, the Valliants became a force in English football and became one of the leading teams in the league. The South London football club were promoted to the second division in 1935, and they followed that up by being promoted to the first tier the following season. They finished the 1936-37 season off in second position and were now one of the major football teams in the world. The following two seasons brought about similar success as Seed took Charlton to forth and third position in the top flight during the 1937-38 and 1938-39 seasons respectively. The Addicks made an appearance in the 1946 FA Cup Final, playing against Derby in the final, losing the match 4-1. The following year was a huge success for the club as they won their first major trophy, the FA Cup, this time beating Burnley 1-0 in the final. Charlton’s most well known player during this time period was their goal keeper Sam Bartram, one of the first goalies to entertain the supporters with excursions out of his penalty area. He was named the ‘best ever goalkeeper to never play for England.
